Helping Low-Income Tenants Avoid Post-Foreclosure Evictions

On October 2, 2008, the Editorial Team of Clearinghouse Review: Journal of Poverty Law and Policy sponsored a webinar on how to help clients who are tenants (including Section 8 tenants) in rental properties subject to foreclosure. Defending Against Foreclosure Rescue Scams

August 7, 2009, FREE program and earn MCLE credit

Foreclosures continue unabated. More and more California homeowners are falling behind on their mortgage payments and face foreclosure. In these difficult times, homeowners are susceptible to offers that claim foreclosure can be avoided. Attend this 3-hour program to get all of the information you need to represent your client: how to identify a rescue scam and the administrative and litigation tools to address those scams.

What You Will Learn:

  • The details of non-attorney and attorney foreclosure rescue scams
  • How to combat foreclosure rescue scams: strategies and remedies
  • Administrative complaint procedures at the local, state and federal levels
  • Criminal enforcement: a statewide survey and a look at one county's efforts
  • Ethical issues related to foreclosure rescue scams and State Bar disciplinary actions

California CLE Credit:
This program has been approved for MCLE credit in the amount of 3.0 credit hours, of which 1.0 credit hour can be applied toward the ethics requirement. PLI will retain the required MCLE records for this program.

Protecting the Rights of Homeowners with Limited Scope Representation

June 8, 2009 FREE PROGRAM and earn MCLE Credit

Homeowner association law is complex and the field is growing rapidly. This program is designed to not only provide the technical background to the field, but the practical skills to use limited scope representation to assist homeowners who would otherwise be without competent legal assistance.

This program will also provide best practices, risk management materials, fee agreements, and other materials, including sample fee agreements, client handouts, and other documents designed to set up a limited scope representation practice from scratch.

Defending Subprime Mortgage Foreclosures 2008

FREE PROGRAM and earn MCLE Credit (6 hours) 

This program will provide you with the basic information you will need to represent a low-income subprime mortgage foreclosure client, spot potential predatory lending, and much more.  The last hour of the program provides specific information related to California's non-judicial foreclosure process.

 

Attorneys in legal services and Legal Aid, volunteer lawyer program staff attorneys, housing counselors, and other working with low-income client with subprime mortgage problems will also benefit from attending.

California Unlawful Detainer Defense

 

FREE PROGRAM and earn MCLE Credit (3 hours)

 

The program is specifically designed to equip attorneys in law firms and corporate law departments who are interested in volunteering to represent low-income clients facing eviction from subprime mortgage foreclosed property.  Attorneys in legal services and Legal Aid, volunteer lawyer program staff attorneys, housing counselors, and other working with low-income client with subprime mortgage problems will also benefit from attending.

After this training you will:

  • Understand the basics of unlawful detainer practice
  • The key issues in foreclosures unfair detainer defenses
  • Understand how to handle unlawful utility shut-offs and change of locks
